Boxed In
In the Style of Piet Mondrian
2017
In my painting, you see many lines, shapes, and colors. There are only squares and rectangles in my painting, each filled in with various shades of blue, purple, and grey. At first glance, all you would see in my painting is literally just a bunch of sad, dull colored squares. But actually, I chose to do this painting and use these colors to represent my first year of college. This is my second semester at TCC, which is why I put the year 2017 on the credit line. The title "Boxed In," is also meant to represent my feelings of being trapped in a never ending cycle of studying, studying some more, and taking an occasional nap. The dull, sad colors are meant to represent my diminishing social life because of college. Now a days, the only thing I do for "fun" is work out whenever I have the time to. If I were to climb inside the painting I think I would feel sad because of the colors, and also confused and overwhelmed because of the numerous boxes. Based on my explanation of the painting, I think I chose the right colors. The various shades of blue, grey, and purple all complement each other well and look good together. The date does make a difference, because while I started college last year, it wasn't until this year that I started feeling overwhelmed with college. A few elements of art I used in my painting are line, shape, texture, and color. I used line to outline the shapes of the squares and rectangles, and color to fill in the squares and rectangles as well. Texture is also present, because if you feel the painting, it's not smooth due to my unexperienced brush strokes. Also, I selected a variety of similar colors to try and create a sense of balance and unity in the painting. I think other people should see this work because I think the meaning it's meant to depict, the sense of being boxed in and trapped in a usual routine, is relatable to other college students.
